India - Orphanage
Last year, Nottingham helped to build an orphanage in an area ravaged by the 2004 tsunami...

The Orphanage that Nottingham
Built:

The guarantee that the money from Drop in the Ocean went to Tsunami affected children was crucial to us. We contacted some major charities (as well as some less known). It became apparent that it was going to be more difficult than we anticipated to have control over where the money was channelled. We also wanted feedback and progress reports but again we were told that these were far too much to ask. However we persevered in finding an organization that could provide these things. As our discussions with the Family Care Foundation progressed we were able to breathe a huge sigh of relief. They provided us with detailed information about the project as well as photographs and cost breakdowns. I can even tell you that the toilet partition will be a 4’6” thick brick wall using cement mortar to 1:6 ratio (bit TOO much information there though).

The orphanage is being built in Karankadu, Ramnad District Tamil Nadu, India by Family Services India and The Claretians: the grassroots organisations that have been working alongside the FCF for many years.

Impact of Tsunami on the village

Family Services India and the Claretians have the experience of having worked with the people affected by tsunami from the time the disaster ravaged the coast of South Asia. From the beginning we have been concentrating on the people who have not attracted the attention of media and the government. From this perspective we have identified the people of Karankadu and the surrounding villages as needy requiring urgent intervention of external agencies with out which they have to languish in poverty and misery.

Location

This village is situated in the Palk Bay, 300 Km south of Chennai. The population of the village is 5000.

Beneficiaries of the Home

The Children's Home will accommodate tsunami affected children hailing from fisher folk families of the neighbouring villages that are from extremely poor background and who parents are not able to care for them sufficiently or give them education. It will cater to children from 30 villages lying between Thondi and Ramanathapuram. Of the 150 children residing in this Children's Home some will be orphan children, but others will have one parent or sometimes two parents who are not economically able to care for and educate their children.

FCF are confident that this building project will have a positive long term effect on the education and emotional development of these villages’ children. They are certain they can oversee the project well as they have a good knowledge of the people of Karankadu and have established a good rapport with them

The Family Care Foundation are fantastic people to work with. Here's what they say about us...

“The Drop in the Ocean team have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for their work, it’s great to work with people like this when they are also so committed and professional. We're so pleased to be working with the Drop in the Ocean team and the people of Nottingham, we hope to develop our relationship in the future”
